Contortion

A well? A prison? A womb? At the beginning, there is this long plexiglass box that encloses and confines her. Through groping, twisting, and stretching, the body begins to find a way out. A liberation? She must still struggle to break down invisible walls, shatter inner chains, and find her place. How does one cast off, and set a course towards oneself?

Biography

Alice Rende has developed a unique approach to contortion. In 2022, she founded Compagnie AR in Aix-en-Provence to support her artistic projects. Alice also works as a director and teaches contortion. She has conducted academic research (Master’s and PhD) in performing arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Her work explores the politics of the body and vertigo, drawing on narratives rooted in circus experience.

Her first solo piece, Passages, has been touring since 2019. Her second creation, Fora, was awarded the SACD Processus Cirque Prize. Alice is currently developing a new piece, Le bonheur clandestin (working title), which is scheduled to premiere in January 2027 as part of the BIAC in Marseille (France).
